Mission. JROTC is a program of character and leadership development. The mission of the JROTC program is, "To motivate young people to be better citizens. This course affords cadets the opportunity to develop self discipline, self confidence, integrity, personal pride, leadership, and management. The emphasis in JROTC is providing opportunities for self improvement. The extent to which you are successful in achieving these improvements is directly dependent you your involvement in the program and effort toward meeting or exceeding the standards. 2. Instructor Expectations. a. Show up every day except when there is a valid emergency. b. Be in the class on time. c. Participate fully each day you show up. d. Set the example for others. e. Train yourself for the future. 3. Course Description. LET-4 is a progression of skills acquired through LET-3. LET-4 cadets are standard bearers of the JROTC program. The course teaches advanced level skills particularly in the area of management and communications. LET-4 cadets are assigned as battalion staff officers, company commanders, and assistant staff officers and rank from cadet second lieutenant to cadet captain. For the purposes of Leadership Lab, LET-4 cadets fulfill squad leader duties to train and mentor the LET-1s. 4. Course Sequence. A schedule of the current weeks training will be discussed each Monday. In accordance with the Master Training Schedule, the subjects taught this semester will be as follows: Subject Intro to LET-4 Citizenship in Action Basic Command & Staff Principles * Basic Word Processing ** Staff Operations Foundations for Success Becoming a Better Writer ** Foundations for Success Terrorism * Leadership Theory and Application Leadership Principles * l Foundations for Success Becoming a Better Speaker *** Cadet Challenge *** Leadership Lab*** Physical Training/Organized Athletics Note: * - Evaluation by test ** - Evaluation by written formal paper *** - Evaluation by performance test SUBJECT: LET-4 Syllabus 5. Course Routine. Leadership Labs will normally be held during part of the class period on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (Friday) each week. Physical Training/Organized Athletics will be on Fridays (Thursday). After uniform issue, in-ranks inspections will be held every Wednesday unless otherwise indicated. 6. Participation and Clothing. Cadets are expected to actively participate in JROTC. Non-participation in any aspect of the JROTC program is not an option. To be excused from participation in any JROTC activity the cadet must provide a written excuse from parent or doctor. For Leadership Lab and physical training/organized athletics, cadets are required to wear appropriate clothing and failure to wear appropriate clothing is not an excuse for nonparticipation. Leadership Labs on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are best performed in comfortable soft-sole shoes. For physical training, organized athletics, and the Cadet Challenge on Fridays, appropriate clothing should be worn suitable for either indoor or outdoor activities. 7. Course Grading. Each report card period grade and the final exam grade is determined as follows: Classroom (tests, written papers, performance) 30% Uniform inspections 60% Leadership Lab Test* 10% 100% * Includes a performance test Note: In all aspects of JROTC, success is based on maturity and demonstrated performance. Participation as a cadet in good standing on a JROTC team is awarded 6 merits per grading period. Six merits raises the grade by 2 points. 8. Promotions and Awards. All LET-4s begin one rank below the authorized rank for their position. Promotions, like awards, are based on performance. To be eligible for promotion a cadet must have a minimum C average during the first two grading periods and have missed no more than one uniform inspection without makeup. Upon failing to makeup the second missed uniform wear, the cadet will not be promoted. 9. Final Exam. Final Exams in JROTC are comprised of the same three components as each grading period, ie. written test, leadership lab, and uniform inspection. The last uniform inspection (wearing) grade will be used for the uniform component of the Final Exam. Exemptions from final exams follow guidelines set forth by °èapp. 10. Extra Curricular Activities and Service Projects. Cadets are encouraged to participate in JROTC extracurricular teams which may include the Color Guard, Drill Team, and the Rifle Team dependent on cadet interest. Regardless of participation on a team, all LET-4 cadets are encouraged to participate in as many Blue Chip activities as possible. 11. Electronic Devices. The use of electronic devices during class time is a disruption of the learning process. Consistent with °èapp policy the Hunter Huss policy is, Cell phone/wireless communication usage is allowed in the cafeteria in the mornings before school begins, during student lunches, and after school. During the instructional day, cell phones and wireless communication devices are to be off and away. Any electronic device used inappropriately will result in the device being confiscated and turned in to the school office. SUBJECT: LET-4 Syllabus 10. GCS Materials/Supplies statement: °èapp County students are not required to bring any supplies with them to school in order to access our educational programs. If you would like to purchase personal supplies for your child, this list may act as an optional guide. While the following items are not requirements, donations by parents, businesses, civic organizations, or faith-based organizations are always greatly appreciated .
